¿Qué es un Círculo Parcial? Sector vs. Segmento

Arc Length (L) L = (θ / 360) × 2πr L = r × θ 10.47 cm
Chord Length (c) c = 2r × sin(θ / 2) c = 2r × sin(θ / 2) 10.00 cm
Sagitta / Height (h) h = r × [1 - cos(θ / 2)] h = r - √(r² - c²/4) 1.34 cm
Sector Area (A_sec) A = (θ / 360) × πr² A = ½ r² θ 52.36 cm²

Para r = 12 in, θ = 45°: (45/360) × π × 144 ≈ 56.55 in²
02

Para c = 20 in, h = 3 in: (2/3) × 20 × 3 = 40.00 in²

Geometric Derivation: Segment Area Formula

Proving why segment area equals sector area minus the central triangle:

1. Full Circle Area: A = πr²
2. Sector Area with angle θ in radians: A_sec = (θ / 2π) × (πr²) = ½ r² θ
3. The isosceles triangle has two sides equal to r and included angle θ
4. Triangle Area from trigonometry: A_tri = ½ × a × b × sin(C) = ½ r² sin(θ)
5. Subtract triangle from sector: A_seg = A_sec - A_tri = ½ r² θ - ½ r² sin(θ)
6. Factored Formula: A_segment = ½ r² (θ - sin θ) [Q.E.D.]

4 Detailed Solved Real-World Examples

Realistic engineering, food portioning, and irrigation problems calculated with complete steps.

Example 1: Automotive Engineering

Windshield Wiper Sweep Area

A wiper blade of length 60 cm rotates through an angle of 110°:

Given: r = 60 cm, θ = 110°
Angle fraction: 110 / 360 = 0.30555
Full circle area: π × 60² ≈ 11,309.73 cm²
Wiper Sector Area = 0.30555 × 11,309.73 ≈ 3,455.75 cm² (0.346 m²)
Example 2: Petroleum Storage

Horizontal Fuel Tank Liquid Cross-Section

A cylindrical diesel tank of radius 5 feet is filled to a central angle of 90°:

Given: r = 5 ft, θ = 90° (1.5708 rad)
Sector Area = (90/360) × π × 25 ≈ 19.63 sq ft
Triangle Area = ½ × 25 × sin(90°) = 12.50 sq ft
Liquid Segment Area = 19.63 - 12.50 = 7.13 sq ft
Example 3: Agriculture & Irrigation

Center-Pivot Farm Sprinkler Sector

A rotating irrigation arm of length 400 meters waters an arc of 270° around an obstacle:

Given: r = 400 m, θ = 270° (3/4 circle)
Sector Area = 0.75 × π × 400² = 120,000π
Irrigated Area = 376,991.12 m² (37.70 hectares)
Example 4: Food Portioning

Single Slice of a 16-Inch Pizza (8 Slices)

Find the exact surface area of one slice from an 8-slice pie:

Diameter = 16 in (r = 8 in), θ = 360° / 8 = 45°
Full Pie Area = π × 8² = 64π ≈ 201.06 sq in
Slice Area = 201.06 / 8 = 8π ≈ 25.13 sq in (162.14 cm²)

Common Pitfalls in Partial Circle Calculations

Mixing Degrees and Radians in ½ r² (θ - sin θ)

When using ½ r² (θ - sin θ), the first θ MUST be in radians. If you enter degrees for θ, your segment area will be completely wrong!

Confusing Sector with Segment

A sector includes the two radii leading to the circle center (pizza slice). A segment is only the outer cap cut off by a straight chord.

Pro Tip: Chord Sagitta Formula

If you don't know the angle, find radius using chord width c and arch height h: r = (c² / 8h) + (h / 2).

Pro Tip: Major Segment Symmetry

To find a major segment area (over 180°), calculate the minor segment on the opposite side and subtract it from πr².
